Legend has it that in ancient times, there was a skilled craftsman who built houses so that each one was arranged like tightly packed fish scales, and as neatly aligned as the teeth of a comb. From afar, they appeared densely packed and impressive. People admired his superb craftsmanship and imitated him, and as a result, the houses in the towns gradually became neat and beautiful. Later, people used the expression "鳞次栉比" to describe buildings or ships that are closely and neatly arranged.
