One arrow, two eagles, is a Chinese idiom meaning to shoot two eagles with one arrow. Later, it was used as a metaphor for achieving two goals with one action. The idiom comes from the „History of the Northern Zhou Dynasty“ (北史·长孙晟传), which tells the story of the Northern Zhou general Changsun Sheng (长孙晟) who shot two eagles with one arrow while escorting the princess to her marriage to the Turks. This demonstrates his exceptional archery skills and the ability to achieve multiple goals with one action.
Origin Story
Changsun Sheng, a general of the Northern Zhou Dynasty, was known for his strategic intelligence. One day, he was ordered to escort the princess to her marriage to the Turks. The Turkic king Shetu wanted to test Changsun Sheng's intelligence and invited him on a hunting expedition. During the hunt, they saw two eagles fighting over a piece of meat. Changsun Sheng, quick and skillful, shot an arrow and hit both eagles in the chest at the same time. The eagles crashed to the ground. This feat, hitting two eagles with one arrow, not only showed Changsun Sheng's exceptional archery skills, but also impressed the Turkic king with his intelligence and courage. Since this event, Changsun Sheng became known as the „Double-Arrow Archer“ (一箭双雕) and his courage and intelligence became a model for future generations.
