党同伐异 dǎng tóng fá yì Party with the same and attack the different

Explanation

Party with the same and attack the different, refers to forming factions and parties, favoring one's own group and attacking those with different opinions. This idiom is generally used to describe people who are stubborn, reject those who disagree with them, and are not good at listening to others' opinions.

Origin Story

dang tong fa yi, zhi jie bang fen pai, pian xiang tong huo, da ji bu tong yi jian de ren. zhe ge cheng yu yi ban lai xing rong ren gu zhi ji jian, pai chu yi ji, bu shan yu ting qu bie ren de yi jian.

In the Han dynasty, during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han, in order to strengthen central authority, the policy of "eliminating all other schools of thought and upholding Confucianism" was adopted. This led to many Confucian schools beginning to vie for power and influence. During the reign of Emperor Xuan of Han, because the debates among the Confucian schools became increasingly fierce, Emperor Xuan ordered a large-scale Confucian discussion to be held at the Yellow Family Book Repository, known as the "Stone Chamber Pavilion Conference." However, this conference did not achieve its intended purpose and instead exacerbated the contradictions between the Confucian schools. Many Confucian scholars, in order to defend their own views, began to form factions and attack those who held different viewpoints. In the end, this conference became a fight between factions, and did not truly contribute to the development of Confucianism. This reflects the ideology of "party with the same and attack the different", which is not conducive to academic exchange and the progress of thought.

Usage
