During the Spring and Autumn Period, the Song and Zheng states were at war. Hua Yuan, the commander of the Song army, sacrificed sheep to boost morale before the battle, but forgot to share the meat with his charioteer, Yang Zhen. Yang Zhen, resentful, secretly led Hua Yuan's chariots to the Zheng camp and surrendered at a critical moment, leading to a devastating defeat for the Song army. This story illustrates the dangers of gezi weizheng. Had the Song soldiers been united and fought together, they would not have been easily defeated. Hua Yuan and Yang Zhen, each with their own agenda, disregarded the greater good, ultimately resulting in the annihilation of their army – a tragic consequence of gezi weizheng.
