Origin Story
During the Western Han Dynasty, the famous general Li Ling was ordered to lead troops against the Xiongnu. He encountered a strong enemy and was outnumbered, ultimately leading to his forced surrender. Most court officials accused Li Ling of cowardice, but only Sima Qian strongly disagreed, arguing that Li Ling was not cowardly. He knew that Li Ling would undoubtedly have fought selflessly and devoted himself for the country on the battlefield had he not been outnumbered. Sima Qian was tortured for his defense of Li Ling, but he remained steadfast in his convictions, upholding the truth of history. Li Ling’s story embodies courage and loyalty even in desperate circumstances. Though the ultimate outcome is regrettable, his dedication and loyalty to the state continues to deserve admiration.
