Explanation
Originally, "Gūjiā guǎrén" was the self-designation of ancient emperors, later referring to those isolated and helpless. It describes a person lonely and isolated, lacking interpersonal communication.
Origin Story
During the Tang Dynasty, a poet named Li Bai, enjoyed great fame but was exiled to a remote place for offending powerful officials. Far from the court, with few close friends, he spent his days alone with his pen and ink, reciting poetry in solitude. This made him feel incredibly lonely, like a solitary person surrounded by crowds. He yearned for past days of drinking and chatting with friends, and he missed his family back home, his melancholy was difficult to alleviate. Even his widely circulated poems could not fill the emptiness and loneliness in his heart. Only under the moonlight could he find a trace of solace. Li Bai's story, much like the idiom "Gūjiā guǎrén", warns people to cherish interpersonal relationships and avoid becoming isolated and helpless.
