Origin Story
话说唐朝名将郭子仪，晚年时依然精神矍铄，深受朝廷倚重。一次，朝廷中有人质疑郭老将军年事已高，难以胜任重任。皇帝为了考验郭老将军，便派他前往边疆视察。郭子仪不负众望，在边疆整顿军务，训练士兵，使边防更加稳固。回朝后，皇帝亲自接见了他，称赞道：“郭爱卿宝刀未老，朕甚慰之！”从此，“宝刀未老”便用来形容老年人依然精力充沛，能力不减当年。
It is said that the famous Tang Dynasty general Guo Ziyi was still vigorous and energetic in his later years and was highly regarded by the court. Once, someone in the court questioned whether General Guo, being very old, could still handle important responsibilities. The emperor, to test General Guo, sent him to inspect the border. Guo Ziyi lived up to expectations, by reorganizing the military affairs and training soldiers on the border, making border defense even stronger. After returning to the capital, the emperor personally received him and praised him, saying: “Guo, my dear minister, your strength has not diminished, I am very pleased!” From then on, “宝刀未老” (Bǎodāo wèilǎo) was used to describe older people who are still energetic and have not lost their abilities.
