放任自流 fàng rèn zì liú let things drift

指听凭事物自然发展,不加过问或干涉。也指对人或事物不加管理,放任不管。

To let things develop naturally without interference or control. It can also refer to people or things left unattended or uncontrolled.

Origin Story

从前,有个农夫,他种了一片稻田。春天播种后,他便撒手不管,任其自生自灭。到了秋天,稻田颗粒无收,农夫后悔莫及。他的邻居老张,勤勤恳恳地耕作,精心照料,秋收时节,收获满满。农夫这才明白,要获得丰收,不能放任自流,必须付出辛勤的劳动。

Once upon a time, there was a farmer who planted a rice paddy. After sowing in the spring, he left it alone to fend for itself. In autumn, the rice paddy yielded nothing, and the farmer deeply regretted it. His neighbor, Lao Zhang, worked diligently and took meticulous care of his field. During the harvest season, he reaped a bountiful harvest. The farmer then understood that to achieve a good harvest, one cannot leave things to their own devices; one must put in hard work.

Usage

用作谓语、宾语、定语;指听之任之。

yòng zuò wèiyǔ, bǐnyǔ, dìngyǔ;zhǐ tīng zhī rèn zhī

Used as a predicate, object, and attributive; means to leave something to its own devices.

  • 他做事总是放任自流,结果一塌糊涂。
