Origin Story

During the Spring and Autumn period, the ruler of the Jin state, Duke Xiang, passed away. His son, Prince Yigao, was young, and Zhao Dun was in power. Zhao Dun wanted to enthrone Duke Xiang's brother, Yong, as the new ruler and sent messengers to Qin to welcome him. The mother of Prince Yigao, Miao Ying, upon learning of this, wept day and night while holding Yigao in the court. With tears, she cried, "Duke Xiang's last words are still ringing in my ears; how can we disobey his wishes?" Her pleas moved many ministers, and Zhao Dun eventually abandoned his plan to enthrone Yong. Prince Yigao successfully succeeded to the throne. This story illustrates the meaning of the idiom "yan you zai er," and the loyalty and sense of responsibility it embodies.
