During the Warring States period in China, a man from Chu dropped his sword into a river. He immediately marked the spot on the boat's side where the sword had fallen, thinking he could find it there after the boat docked. After docking, he did search at the marked spot, but could not find his sword. The reason was that the sword's position had changed while the boat was moving; he stubbornly searched at the original mark, doomed to failure.
