Meaning
To describe the failure of imitating others, which leads to the loss of one's own skills or characteristics.
比喻模仿别人不成功，反而失去自己原有的技能或特点。
Origin
战国时期，赵国邯郸有个年轻人，听说邯郸人走路姿态优雅，便前往邯郸学习他们的步法。他模仿得很认真，却越学越不像，最后竟忘了自己原来的走路方法，只能在地上爬着回去。
zhànguó shíqí, zhào guó Hándān yǒu ge niánqīng rén, tīngshuō Hándān rén zǒulù zāi zǐ yōuyǎ, biàn qiánwǎng Hándān xuéxí tāmen de bùfǎ. tā mófǎng de hěn rènzhēn, què yuè xué yuè bù xiàng, zuìhòu jìng wàng le zìjǐ yuánlái de zǒulù fāngfǎ, zhǐ néng zài dì shàng pázhe huí qù.
During the Warring States period, a young man from Handan, the capital of the Zhao state, went to Handan to learn the elegant gait of its people. He imitated them diligently, but the more he practiced, the clumsier he became, until he finally forgot his own way of walking and could only crawl back on his hands and knees.
Usage
用于形容盲目模仿，结果适得其反，甚至失去自身优势的情况。
yòng yú xíngróng mángmù mófǎng, jiéguǒ shìdéfǎn, shènzhì shīqù zìshēn yōushì de qíngkuàng.
Used to describe the situation where blindly imitating others leads to the opposite result, even losing one's own advantages.
