公元前494年，吴王夫差在夫椒大败越王勾践，越国首都也被攻破。越王勾践向吴国求和，吴王准备答应。但是，伍子胥却劝吴王说：“树德务滋，除恶务尽。”他认为，不能只顾眼前利益，而要彻底铲除越国的威胁，否则后患无穷。吴王并未听从伍子胥的建议，结果在20年后，越王勾践卧薪尝胆，最终灭掉了吴国。这个故事告诉我们，处理问题要彻底，不能心慈手软，否则会留下隐患，最终自食其果。
In 494 BC, King Fuchai of Wu defeated King Goujian of Yue in the great battle of Fu Jiao, and Yue's capital was also captured. King Goujian of Yue asked for peace with the Kingdom of Wu, and King Fuchai was ready to agree. However, Wu Zixu advised King Fuchai, saying: "Cultivate virtue diligently and eliminate evil thoroughly." He believed that one should not only consider immediate benefits but thoroughly eliminate the threat of Yue, otherwise there would be endless troubles. King Fuchai did not follow Wu Zixu's advice. As a result, 20 years later, King Goujian, having endured hardships and cultivated his strength, finally destroyed the kingdom of Wu. This story tells us that dealing with problems must be thorough, one cannot be merciful, otherwise there will be hidden dangers, and eventually one will suffer the consequences.
