Origin Story
At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, warlords competed for power. Cao Cao led his army to attack Xu Zhou, but the governor of Xu Zhou, Tao Qian, could not resist and asked Liu Bei for help. Liu Bei led Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and other soldiers to the rescue. Tao Qian wanted to cede Xu Zhou to Liu Bei, but Liu Bei knew of Cao Cao's strength and decided to be polite first and then use force. He first sent an envoy to send a letter to Cao Cao, stating that he was only helping Tao Qian and had no other ambitions, and hoped that Cao Cao would withdraw his troops. After Cao Cao received the letter, he originally wanted to kill the envoy, but the strategist Guo Jia advised him to reconsider, pointing out that Lü Bu was seizing the opportunity to attack Yan Zhou, and it was therefore not advisable to fall out with Liu Bei. After Cao Cao weighed the pros and cons, he agreed to Liu Bei's request and temporarily withdrew his troops. Although Cao Cao superficially withdrew his troops, he secretly observed Liu Bei's movements, preparing to attack Xu Zhou later. Liu Bei's strategy of being polite first and then using force temporarily prevented a direct conflict with Cao Cao and bought Xu Zhou valuable time to rest. But the river of history flowed endlessly, and eventually war broke out. This story shows how to use strategy in complex political struggles to achieve one's goals. Sometimes, the strategy of being polite first and then using force can turn the tide in critical moments.
