During the Spring and Autumn period, the Jin and Chu states waged war over Song. Chu’s army was winning and Song was about to surrender, yet a Chu general disobeyed the king's order and withdrew. Meanwhile, the Jin general Xun Linfu disobeyed his commander and attacked Chu. Wu Can, a Chu official, analyzed the Jin army’s situation, noting that its generals were self-willed and the morale low.
