Explanation

It is a metaphor for not understanding that things have changed and still looking at the problem statically, lacking the ability to adapt.

Origin Story

During the Warring States period, a man from Chu was crossing a river by boat when he accidentally dropped his sword into the water. He immediately made a mark on the side of the boat where the sword fell, thinking that he would be able to find the sword once the boat reached the shore. After the boat docked, he went into the water to search according to the mark, but found nothing. The sword had already floated away with the current.
