Origin Story

During the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a man named Boyi, known for his integrity and adherence to principles. One day, he met King Wu of Zhou. The king described how he overthrew the tyrant King Zhou and established the Zhou dynasty. Boyi retorted, “That is usurpation, a violation of the Heavenly Way; I absolutely do not believe you!” King Wu, rather than getting angry, patiently explained himself. Boyi still insisted, “I shall not believe your lies.” King Wu sighed, “Alas, it seems you don’t believe me—truly a ‘wèi yú bù xìn’!” This story illustrates how even if something is true, improper expression can make it unacceptable.
